Ederlezi
is the Tzigane (Gypsy*)
name of the Serbian Saint George, the 6th
of May.
As a name Ederlezi comes from the Turkish word Hidirellez. It is the name of early spring holidays.
It is made from 2 prophet names, Hizir and Ilyas. Hizir is the plants and poor people protector. Ilyas is the animals and waters protector. The legend says that they were friends and they drank Water of Immortality. Then they swore to see each other each 5th of May night in order to give back the life to nature. Hidirellez is a very important day in Asia Minor. The Slavs from Balkans added the Christian aspect coming from the St George Day.As a song, the origin of Ederlezi is a bit controversial. It is sometimes introduced as a traditional Tzigane songIt first has been published in 1988 on the sound track of “Le temps de Gitans” directed by Emir Kusturica. This version of Ederlezi has been made by Goran Bregovic

Ederlezi
also exists as a
Serbian-Croat version made by the band
Bijelo Dugme (white
button) of which the guitarist was Goran
Bregovic. In this version (as in almost all "pop" cover) the lyrics are not the same as those we know in Goran Bregovic's version.
Thousand of covers, in any music style, (sometimes quite tasteless!) of Ederlezi exist. The Boban
Markovic Orkestar's cover is an interesting trumpets and male voice one.
The success of this song as well in the Rroms community as abroad, has been a real surprise.
From that time this tune is the Serbian Nationalists hymn despite of Goran Bregovic went against the idea.
